One of West Ham’s mooted summer targets is available for a bargain fee, according to emerging reports…
What’s the word?
Earlier this month, the Irons were said to have been tracking Sampdoria midfielder Morten Thorsby ahead of a potential move this summer, as per Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness).
It’s now been revealed by Calciomercato that the 25-year-old is available for just €10m (£8.5m) with add-ons included amid interest from their Serie A rivals Napoli.
Thorsby has two years to run on his current deal and has regularly been scouted by teams across Europe, particularly in England and Germany.
It seems like the central midfield position is an area that Hammers boss David Moyes would like to strengthen going into next season, and quite understandably so.
They are merely one injury to either Tomas Soucek or Declan Rice away from having to rely on retiring skipper Mark Noble. And even then, he’s not enough, with a likely 50-plus game campaign on the horizon after the East London outfit qualified for the Europa League.
One name that has been heavily linked with a move to the London Stadium is Czech sensation Alex Kral but he is thought to be valued in the region of £30m, which would create a considerable dent to their transfer kitty.
Considering Moyes also needs a new striker, centre-back and maybe another addition at full-back, it would be unforgivable to splash that much on a backup which is why Thorsby is of great appeal.
The Norway international has enjoyed a very productive season, where he proved to be an influence at either end of the pitch.
Standing at 6 foot 2, his towering presence saw him average 4.2 aerial duels won per game, whilst he also managed 2.3 tackles per outing too. On top of three goals and one assist, via WhoScored.
Only one player in the whole of the Serie A covered more distance per game than Thorsby (11.7km per match).
His playing style has been likened to Chelsea powerhouse N’Golo Kante, which may be a surprise based on the height advantage but certainly not based on his statistical output this campaign.
Thorsby also revealed that he caused Cristiano Ronaldo a few problems during Sampdoria’s two meetings with Juventus, claiming that “he was upset” when he robbed him of the ball.
Also described as a “maestro” and as “capable of creating plays out of nowhere,” Thorsby could well be an absolute bargain at just £8.5m and he is certainly a far cheaper option than Kral.
GSB must look to sanction this move, allowing Moyes to properly bolster other key areas this summer.
AND in other news, Moyes can save GSB millions by unleashing 20 y/o West Ham gem with “serious potential”…
